a conversation with my 8-year-old niece
Nephew: I want to marry Melee (my dog)
Niece: You can't marry Melee, he's a boy.
Me: I think they problem is that he can't marry him because Melee is a dog.
Niece: No, he can't marry Melee because he's a boy and boys can't marry boys. It's illegal.
Me: .....
And my heart was sad. This wasn't a matter of politics, or religious beliefs. It was just a cold, hard fact. And she was right, it is illegal. And my heart is sad for children growing up in North Carolina.
